Our goal at United Community Centers (UCC) is to provide a continuum of programming that result in healthier families in East New York. We do this through HIV education and risk reduction, nutrition and asthma education programs, and the East New York Farms! project
UCC has been organizing and educating around HIV since the early 1990s. Although numbers of HIV infection overall have declined nationwide, the fastest growing group getting infected with HIV is African-American and Latina heterosexual women. In response to this changing demographic of HIV infection, UCC has developed an in-depth HIV/STD prevention workshop series. We’ve established a condom distribution program through local businesses, and free male and female condoms are available on a walk-in basis at our office.
We hold an annual community event of World AIDS Day to provide information about HIV prevention as well as honor those living with the disease, and remember those who have lost their fight.
Our intensive 5 session Women’s Workshop Series is held around the community at public schools, other organizations, and day cares free of charge. For more information or to schedule a series, contact us.

UCC offers the Salsa, Sabor y Salud free nutrition program to families in the community. Through 8 sessions, participants learn about ways to healthfully prepare food, and easy ways to incorporate exercise into their lives. Children and adult classes run concurrently, and some series are offered in Spanish.
Throughout the series, participants have enjoyed swapping recipes, learning about the origins of food, bringing in new dishes to share, and trading recipe tips.

East New York has one of the highest rates of asthma in NYC, especially among children. Our recent program, Managing Asthma in East New York, examined indoor and outdoor air pollution to improve air quality, and looked for ways residents can help make asthma less prevalent in East New York.
We informed parents about asthma, asthma triggers and allergens, what can be done to minimize/eliminate indoor asthma triggers, and what can be done to anticipate and prevent or manage asthma attacks through workshops at local public schools. Through the East New York Environmental Council, we educated residents about how they impact air quality in such simple ways as allowing their car engines to idle.
The Managing Asthma project produced the Green Guide, a durable tri-fold brochure that offered simple ways residents of East New York can improve their air quality at home, by reducing asthma triggers and exposure to chemicals from cleaning products.
Workshops are also available on parenting, domestic violence and breast health awareness. Call us to schedule one!
