East New York Farms (ENYF)! promotes local and regional sustainable agriculture and community-based economic development in the center of an urban environment in New York City.
Started in 1995, the project brings together community gardeners, youth, craftspeople, and regional family farmers to address food issues in the community.
The ENYF! project is comprised of a youth internship program, 2 half-acre community gardens, and a seasonal weekly farmers market. Today, the market is a thriving part of the community, with over 15,000 shoppers annually.
Finding fresh, affordable, and healthy food is one of the biggest day-to-day problems for residents of low-income urban neighborhoods like East New York. ENYF! uses its gardens as productive open spaces where it can educate residents about healthy food options while providing space for local gardeners to grow their own food.
Today, we're proud to say that 60% of ENYF!'s total revenue comes from WIC and the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, which provide coupons to low-income mothers and the elderly. Our customers enjoy affordable access to healthy, fresh fruits and vegetables, while at the same time they help to sustain the community and foster a sense of intergenerational and multicultural cooperation.
