Our Mission

United Community Centers is a neighborhood-based, multi generational, multi service organization that seeks to:
  • Provide first-rate services that meet the needs of the community
  • Involve residents of all ages in social efforts to learn about and resolve community problems

We are open to anyone, although most of the people we serve live in East New York. We strive to create programs that recognize and value the richness of difference" within both our community and the world at large.

Meeting a Community's Needs

As East New York's population grows and changes, so do our programs. Currently, the majority of our programming is focused on childcare, urban agriculture, immigrant services and health.

In its 53-year history, UCC has served low-income residents of East New York with high-quality services and through community organizing and advocacy. Our current programs include:

  • the Morris L. Eisenstein Learning Center, an affiliated daycare center for 165 pre-schoolers and school-aged children
  • a teen group, "ONE"
  • Immigration assistance and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes
  • the publication of a neighborhood newspaper, The Link, distributed bimonthly to 10,000 households
  • Parenting workshops
  • Nutrition and health education
  • East New York Farms!, an urban agriculture project that includes a youth internship program and the largest youth-run farmers market in the country
  • HIV-prevention education
  • and educational, cultural, and social activities for adults and children throughout the year
We also work with residents to keep them involved in issues that affect their lives. For example, UCC has formed a partnership with another community-based organization, C.H.A.N.G.E.R., to organize around issues of predatory lending and housing foreclosures in the community. We encourage families to participate in campaigns for social change, such as rallies to protest budget cuts and marches to support immigration reform.

UCC is a member of United Neighborhood Houses of New York (www.unhny.org) and the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies (www.fpwa.org).
